HOSPICE
Director:  sharon McPherson, RN

Hospice offers comfort, dignity and compassion to people with a life-limiting illness, by providing physical symptom management for the patient and spiritual and emotional support for the patient and their families.

Hospice specializes in a holistic non-curative approach to care, which places emphasis on the quality of life. Native Angels Hospice believes serving hospice patients and their families’ is one of the greatest privileges and trusts a health care professional could ever be granted. In fact, we believe IT IS A CALLING. Realizing no one can be everything to another person, hospice uses a team approach which consists of:

  • RN’s & LPN’s
  • CNA’s
  • Medical Social Workers
  • Chaplains/Spiritual Care Coordinators
  • Volunteers
  • Bereavement Counselors

Our team works hand in hand with our patients’ primary physician to ensure the best care possible for our patients. Hospice care is unique and strives to help patients and their family’s transition from one aspect of life to another. Though life’s end is natural, at Native Angels Hospice, we believe IT’S ABOUT LIVING and THE QUALITY of LIFE.

What is Hospice?
(Hospice Foundation of America )

  • Hospice is a special concept of care designed to provide comfort and support to patients and their families when a life-limiting illness no longer responds to cure-oriented treatments.
  • Hospice care neither prolongs life nor hastens death. Hospice staff and volunteers offer a specialized knowledge of medical care, including pain management.
  • The goal of hospice care is to improve the quality of a patient's last days by offering comfort and dignity.
  • Hospice care is provided by a team-oriented group of specially trained professionals, volunteers and family members.
  • Hospice addresses all symptoms of a disease, with a special emphasis on controlling a patient's pain and discomfort.
  • Hospice deals with the emotional, social and spiritual impact of the disease on the patient and the patient's family and friends.
  • Hospice offers a variety of bereavement and counseling services to families before and after a patient's
    death.

How Does Hospice Work?
(NHPCO.org)
Hospice care is for any person who has a life-threatening or terminal illness. Most reimbursement sources require a prognosis of six months or less if the illness runs its normal course. Patients with both cancer and non-cancer illnesses are eligible to receive hospice care. All hospices consider the patient and family together as the unit of care.

The majority of hospice patients are cared for in their own homes or the homes of a loved one. “Home? may also be broadly construed to include services provided in nursing homes, hospitals and prisons.

Typically, a family member serves as the primary caregiver and, when appropriate, helps make decisions for the terminally ill individual. Members of the hospice staff make regular visits to assess the patient and provide additional care or other services. Hospice staff is on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Payment for Hospice Services:

Medicare, Medicaid, managed care programs and in some instances commercial insurance programs provide coverage for hospice care.

Medicare
Most of our patients are eligible for Medicare coverage. Native Angels accepts the Medicare hospice benefit payment for 100 percent of a patient’s hospice care, that is, hospice services are fully reimbursable by Medicare. Native Angels requires no patient co-payments for our services.

Medicare Eligibility
Patients are eligible for Medicare hospice benefits if:

  • they are eligible for Medicare Part A (also called the hospital insurance portion of Medicare),
  • the patient’s doctor and Native Angels hospice staff certify the patient is terminally ill,
  • the patient chooses to end treatments aimed at attempting to cure the disease or condition and elects treatment that eases pain and discomfort,
  • and a Medicare-certified hospice program, such as Native Angels Hospice, provides the care.

Under the Medicare Hospice benefit, beneficiaries elect to receive what is called palliative treatment - treatment that helps ease pain and discomforting symptoms, rather than trying to cure a disease. By accepting the hospice benefit of Medicare, the patient waives Medicare coverage for treatment of the terminal illness. However, the patient may continue to access standard Medicare benefits for treatment of conditions unrelated to the terminal illness.

What does Medicare cover?
Hospice benefits, which are paid in total by Medicare, include:

  • Doctor services related to the terminal illness
  • Regular home care visits by a nurse
  • Visits by a home healthcare aide for such services as dressing and bathing
  • Chaplain services for the patient and the family, if desired
  • Social work and counseling services
  • Bereavement counseling
  • Medical equipment such as a hospital bed, wheelchair, or walker
  • Medical supplies such as bandages or catheter
  • Drugs to control symptoms and relieve pain
  • Physical, speech and occupational therapy
  • Dietary counseling
  • Short-term hospital care, including respite care for caregivers

Native Angels’ hospice services are available to patients at their own home or in nursing homes, hospitals, or other long-term care or assisted living facilities. The Medicare benefit for hospice care does not cover expenses for room and board at nursing homes or long-term care and assisted living facilities. Medicaid and some personal insurance plans, however, cover these room and board expenses.

Medicaid
Native Angels accepts Medicaid for 100 percent of the charges associated with our services. The services provided by Native Angels under the Medicaid Hospice benefit are the same as those provided under Medicare.
